Our Story
Agudze which means "break of rise of the sun" was founded in 1983. Our founder member Christine Ahiagbede was a part of a professional African Dance group known as Sonkofa in native Ghana.

Agudze Dance Ensemble specializes in community dance and cultural programs with young people. This includes training, doing special projects, educational activities, and workshops where anyone can learn about African Culture and traditions through singing, dancing, poetry, mask making, drama, and artworks. Additionally the group undertakes summer projects for young people, organizes trips to various recreational centres and also conducts after school homework sessions for young people.

All of the group performers have graduated to performance standard from the group beginner classes. The group has members from a wide age range, 3 years upwards with members from the African, Caribbean and English commutates.

The group has a core group of 30+ performers which perform regularly around the country. The group won the dance section of the 8th Annual Festival of Liberation Day in May 1991. The group has performed at hundreds of events in the past 10 years and has provided workshops for schools, I.L.E.A and many more organisation.

Agudze is one of the finest examples in the region of young and community dance. Two performance companies cater for adult’s right down to the very young and both have exuberance, a vitality and a high standard of performance which provides one of the most persuasive advertisements for community dance.

Has a core group of 10 members are currently running one term dance program in schools in Waltham Forest in conjunction with the Arts Council and the Local Authority.
Mission Statement
Agudze Dance Ensemble is a charitable organisation that was created over 20 years
ago in Walthamstow. Waltham Forest. It aims to tell the history of the migration
of the Ewe tribe in Ghana, delivered by the children through song and dances.

The charity’s objects are:
(a) To educate multicultural communities through the arts of Africa through the promotion and preservation of the cultures and traditions of Africa.
​
(b) To encourage and promote cultural integration among people.
(c) To enable all cultures to share in the cultural experiences of Africa.
To bring African Culture to children and young people Across the UK. Telling the people about the emigration of the Ewe tribe of Ghana.Teaching the children in the community, working in schools and performing at local events. Organize workshops for school children throughout the Borough of Waltham Forest. Carrying out projects and work of their life.
